I have long been a big fan of David Allen’s Getting Things Done. However, I have fallen off the wagon many times and eventually try it again. But for the first time, I actually experienced that moment that David calls “Mind like Water.” (It little bit like the smoker who says he can quit at any time. After all, he has done it some many times before.)
One Saturday morning, I had an hour’s drive ahead of me and for some reason, I threw my small Moleskin notebook and pen in the car with me. Before I got to town, I had an thought that I was able to capture at the first stop light (don’t try this at home.) A half-hour later, as I pulled into Starbucks, I captured a stroke of genius re: a new approach to a project that had been bugging me.
But what surprised me most, was later that morning, I realized with a start that I was enjoying the vistas as I drove (there are a lot of mountains and it was going to be a beautiful day), listening to the radio, and nothing was causing the hamster wheel of thought to keep spinning. I realized that I was experiencing that moment that David describes so well.
So I have awarded myself a white belt in GTD and hope that this is the time when GTD sticks with me. I am making much progress with finally getting the discreet steps in the process firmly in mind – largely due to his newest book, “Making It All Work”. The book expands on the original book and explains more about the theories and connections between actions and horizons. More than one light bulb has gone off as I have been reading each chapter.
